Laurence Basse Returns to NYFW with Collection “Burn This City”
On February 13th, at the Paramount Building in Times Square, Laurence Basse debuted her first solo NYFW collection. The French designer and creative mind debuted “Burn This City” and returned to New York to introduce her label, Laurence Basse Paris.
Basse described her collection using the word “warrior.” Her designs focus on what is going on in current events. The motif of her collection was the intersection between beauty and pain. Her inspiration was pulled from the theme of war and peace. With this collection Basse hopes to set a unique tone, breaking any infrastructure with versatility. She aspires to give the audience members something they have never seen prior.
The collection featured intricate leatherwork and various materials such as; silk, wool, and denim. Basse notoriously used black but also incorporated tones of pink, blue, green, and even a sheer metallic. Each model wore a custom chain link in collaboration with Mr.O Altelier. The most memorable piece of the show was divided between a pale baby pink leather jumpsuit and a 2 piece leather gown paired with a headpiece. The show concluded with recycled fur pieces that Basse made by Tas Kletsdis.
Laurence Blasse was a successful model before her career in design. In essence, she was absorbed by the industry. She was discovered by Jean-Paul Gaultier in the late 90s. She then rose to fame through Project Runway where she was a finalist. Much of her designs are driven by her childhood in France. She now has looks featured on magazine covers, NBA Allstars, actors, and more.
Basse’s show was produced by her dear friend Mykel C. Smith and Mykel C. Smith Creative.
