In this exclusive cover story, we uncover the essence of Crystal Waters - her passion, her resilience, and her commitment to using her platform for positive change.

As someone who has been an influential figure in the music industry for many years, what drives your passion for creating music and performing?

First, I believe it's the creativity – I love it when inspiration strikes while I'm writing a song, crafting the lyrics and melody. It's like being in "the zone," where space and time melt away, and a beautiful song emerges. There's truly nothing quite like it. Secondly, I adore traveling and performing. Meeting people from diverse backgrounds, witnessing their joy as they sing along to my songs brings me immense fulfillment. I feel incredibly blessed to share the gifts that bring happiness to the world, and I try never to take them for granted.

Throughout your career, you have achieved massive success with hits like "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)" and set a unique path for yourself in the dance music genre. Could you share the challenges you faced in breaking barriers, and how did you overcome them?

When I first started in House Music, it was primarily confined to underground nightclubs, making it challenging to be taken seriously; critics dismissed my music as a passing fad. Many doubted my ability to create "real music." Yet, I knew in my heart that I was different and that being distinctive was what I embraced and excelled in. Moreover, being a woman in a male-dominated industry posed its challenges, as some producers sought inappropriate expectations. Overcoming these obstacles required resilience, conviction, and ultimately, surrounding myself with a team that supported my authenticity.

You were one of the trailblazers in the dance music movement of the 1990s, introducing a fresh sound to the mainstream. Reflecting on your journey, how do you feel your music has left a lasting impact on the industry, and what legacy do you aspire to leave?

Looking back fills me with pride, especially witnessing major artists like Beyoncé, Drake, and Ariana Grande incorporating House influences into their music. It validates the enduring relevance and love for a genre that many originally perceived as temporary. To envision that I played a part in its longevity is profoundly rewarding. As for my legacy, I hope to inspire others to embrace their uniqueness confidently.

Your music is known for its uplifting and empowering lyrics. How do you find inspiration for your songs, and what message do you aim to convey to your listeners?

My inspiration stems from observing people and situations rather than through verbal communication; I listen and watch closely. Everyone aspires to improve themselves, seeking encouragement and hope along their journey. I strive to craft lyrics that acknowledge individuals' worth, uplift their spirits, and inspire them to strive for betterment. By exploring various perspectives and not just the obvious, I find the essence of my inspiration.

Throughout your career, you have collaborated with numerous artists and producers. Is there a particular collaboration that holds a special place in your heart? How do you navigate the creative process when working with others?

Collaborating with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis remains a standout experience for me. It was a dream come true, as I never imagined venturing into their esteemed realm within my genre. In my creative process, I typically work independently on my part, honing the melody and lyrics to a producer's track. While I enjoy mutual feedback and constructive exchanges, I ensure that the final product aligns with both our visions. Respect for creative input is vital in collaborations. I cherish the days when I recorded vocals in the studio alongside producers, an element I plan to incorporate more in my upcoming album.

Beyond your music, what's next for you?

I am involved in various projects, including hosting a monthly iTunes podcast called "I Am House Radio," syndicated in 52 stations across 19 countries, as well as a weekly show on SiriusXM featuring the same title. My recent single "Dance Dance Dance" has reached impressive ranks on the UK charts. Additionally, I've signed on with Coven Modeling Management NYC and am gearing up for a global tour this spring.

To have another woman seek out the flicker of potential within me and take action to help me climb to greater heights is a rare gift indeed.

Amidst the dazzling lights of a red carpet at a BELLA cover party, I crossed paths with Tamsen Fadal in 2015. Since then, our journeys have intertwined, witnessing each other's triumphs and transformations. Yet, what remains a mystery to many is how Tamsen's encouragement marked a turning point in my career. To have another woman seek out the flicker of potential within me and take action to help me climb to greater heights is a rare gift indeed.

Tamsen's life has been a testament to the power of reinventing oneself and empowering other women to chase after their dreams, regardless of age.

With this cover story, we celebrate her exceptional life and career, which have made her an influential figure in the realm of journalism, personal branding, and empowerment. With a magnetic personality and unrelenting drive, Tamsen has not only conquered the ever-changing media landscape but has also become a beacon of hope for those seeking to overcome obstacles and transform their aspirations into reality.

Tamsen Fadal is an unstoppable force and a symbol of resilience. Join me as we delve deeper into her life. Let her story inspire you to pursue your own dreams with unwavering determination and self-love.

What inspired you to embrace self-love, and how has it positively impacted your life?

Self-love really hit home for me after going through so many of my own ups and downs. Over time, I realized self -love gave me strength and it showed me how important it is to be kind to myself. This shift has been a game-changer. It's helped me embrace who I am, quirks and all, and has given me a whole new level of confidence and peace. From my personal life to my career it has given me true connection.

Can you share some of the key self-love practices and rituals that you incorporate into your daily routine?

Yes, I have learned to look forward to these pockets each day:

Morning Light. Instead of jumping into my day, I start with a walk outside. Whether it's down by the Hudson River or heading to Central Park - this is where my day starts. It grounds me and I believe gives me a quiet space for some self reflection.

Time To Talk. With my new schedule I have added different breaks in my day so I am not just scheduled back to back. My relationships with family and friends have taken such a pivotal role in my life. I take time out each day to make a phone call to someone I have not talked to or check in on a loved one. That personal connection feels so good and has become something I look forward to each afternoon.

Digital detox is not easy for me as a digital creator, but it is necessary in some form. I just schedule a few “unplugged pockets” into each day - meaning time around meals, or non-digital activities like reading or quiet time. It allows me to connect with what's around me and actually be more creative when I plug back in.

Movement. This is in addition to a morning walk. Whether I am moving on a yoga mat or strength training - I fit it in as a priority. In midlife - strength training has moved up on my list of go-to workouts for my bone health and wellness. I just feel energized after even a 15 minute session.

Prioritizing Mental Health. This is big for me. I have gone through a lot of big life changes in the past decade. A divorce. A marriage. A career change. It is important for me to prioritize my mental health. Along with mindfulness practices - I incorporate therapy into each week.

In a world that often emphasizes external validation, how do you navigate the journey of self-acceptance and self-empowerment?

This is all about turning inward and we don’t always take the time to do. I have learned that is what has been key in guiding my life transitions.

Inner Validation. I have learned to appreciate my own thoughts, feelings and achievements. That doesn't mean I am not aware of what other people are doing. But I focus less on others’ approval and try to look more at valuing myself. It comes in the form of setting my own goals and giving a lot of thought to what purpose I want in my life.

Practice Being Present. I love it when my mind clicks and I am present. I get such a feeling of fulfillment about this. It definitely helps lessen the influence of outside pressures.

Be kind to yourself. I encourage people to be kind and understanding if you feel like something didn't go well or you “failed.” Rephrase how you speak to yourself. If you would not talk to your 20 year old self that way - you should not talk to yourself that way today.

You’ve had a successful career in journalism; how has your professional journey intersected with your personal journey towards self-love?

I am thrilled to be taking my passion for storytelling to a new level. I have embarked on a mission to empower women through shared experiences around career moves, midlife, menopause and finding meaning. My aim is to help women claim and embody their true power at any age - encompassing not just resources but rich relationships and opportunities for living a life they have designed for themselves to bring true meaning to each day.

What advice do you have for our readers who may be struggling with self-doubt and insecurity in today's fast-paced and image-conscious society?

It is about finding a way to focus on yourSELF. I have self-doubt and insecurity but I work hard each day to understand it and manage it.

  • Self-Compassion. Be kind to yourself and understand that it's normal to experience self-doubt. Treat yourself with the same empathy and understanding you would offer a friend.

  • Engage Yourself in Physical Activity. This helps my mood in a big way and just gives me a boost of self-esteem. I feel accomplished at the end of any physical activity.

  • Limit Social Media Intake: I love social media but if it is making you feel badly about yourself or you are following accounts that present unrealistic standards that can fuel insecurities. Be aware of who you surround yourself with.

  • Five Friendships. My friends (true friends) fuel my security and reduce my self doubt. My mother always encouraged me to find 5 friends and keep them close. I encourage you to do the dam.

Share your perspective on the evolving definition of self-love and its importance in fostering mental and emotional well-being.

Self love used to be equated to being self or self egotistic. Today this definition has taken on a beautiful new meaning and it has an essential role in giving us a healthy, balanced life. It is so important to use self love to foster both mental and emotional well-being through nurturing ourselves, nourishing our body, mind and soul (healthy eating regular exercise and pursuing passions and practices that make us unique)

And finally, I believe that self-love plays a role in setting the tone for how we enter into and engage in relationships.

We want to have relationships, friend or romantic, from a place of fullness vs. a place of feeling incomplete.

With the massive shift you've made in your career, how will you use your platform to inspire others to prioritize self-love? What initiatives or projects can we look forward to in your near future?

It is time for a bold change when it comes to menopause. Earlier this year, I traveled to Washington DC advocating for The Menopause Research and Equity act - with the aim of introducing legislation to make menopause research a priority.

We have to take a hard look at how we prioritize women's health, and there is such a need for accurate information about perimenopause, menopause, and midlife women's health. By the year 2025, 1 billion women will be experiencing menopause around the world. This is about self-love and love for other women.

And, I am thrilled to be launching a new podcast this year. And I have a book that will be published by Hachette, Spring 2025, about Midlife, Menopause, and Finding Meaning...

With a keen eye for innovation and a passion for blending flavors, Tieghan has single-handedly revolutionized the way we view and savor food.

Tieghan Gerard, the brilliant mind behind the online food destination "Half Baked Harvest," has garnered immense acclaim not only for her mouth-watering recipes but also for her unique perspective on culinary creativity. With a keen eye for innovation and a passion for blending flavors, Tieghan has single-handedly revolutionized the way we view and savor food.

In this interview, we explore Tieghan's inspiration to break free from culinary norms and her relentless pursuit of flavor combinations that truly stimulate our senses. We get a glimpse into her creative process and learn about the transformative influence that her inventive recipes have had on the cooking landscape. From food bloggers to Michelin-starred chefs, Tieghan's artistry has captured the hearts and appetites of countless individuals around the world.

In anticipation of our 2024 Food Revolution Issue, I am thrilled to present to you an exclusive interview with Tieghan, a culinary force to be reckoned with. Join me as I sat with Tieghan and delved into her journey in redefining the way we approach food.

What inspired your culinary journey and led you to become a prominent figure in the food industry?

This path was born from my love of cooking and sharing that joy with my family. I come from a large family of eight children. As you can imagine, mealtimes were chaotic, so that’s where my journey began. In my attempt to reduce some of the chaos, I taught myself how to cook. I soon realized that I could show my love through cooking by creating meals for the people I care about most. Now, I get to do it for millions of people, which keeps me motivated every day!

In the current food landscape, what trends or changes do you foresee shaping the way people approach cooking and dining in the future?

Food trends vary by region and are changing constantly. I see a large focus on quality and tracing foods back to their origin sources. It's important to know where our food comes from. I think people are becoming more aware of this. I also think sustainability is important going forward. An easy way to begin practicing sustainability can be as simple as using what's in your pantry.

I also feel strongly about promoting an environment that's less about diet culture and more about eating real food. That means food with real ingredients and no additives or preservatives. I know this may not always be possible, but this is what I gravitate towards when developing recipes and cooking for my family and loved ones.

Your recipes often blend creativity with comfort. How do you strike a balance between innovative flavors and the familiar, making your dishes accessible to a wide audience?

Keeping recipes creative yet approachable is so important and can be much easier than people think! I try to use ingredients that are readily accessible for most. Sometimes, that means just using a simple cheddar cheese instead of something fancier that not everyone can access. Trust me, no one will complain if you use Swiss cheese from the supermarket versus a fancy Gruyère from a specialty market. I try to use what's in my pantry and available at my local grocery stores. This also incentivizes me to get creative with what I have and to come up with new spins and ideas! I always say, "use what you got!"

This issue of BELLA magazine emphasizes a "Food Revolution." What role do you believe food plays in driving societal change, whether it's related to sustainability, inclusivity, or cultural appreciation?

Food brings people together. Food is and always has been the center of society. Nothing is more special than pouring your love into a meal and having family, friends, and loved ones gather around and enjoy it together. The kitchen is a place of community and happiness. That's why I love what I do so much! It means so much to me that I can bring joy to those around me.

Beyond that, I also hope to affect environmental change, even if it's only in a small way. Teaching people to cook using unprocessed foods and to use what's in their pantry can also help the environment. Heavily processed foods usually have a higher carbon footprint than real food. And if you aren't making a trip to the grocery store, that helps the environment too. Small changes eventually lead to larger ones!

As a successful food influencer, how have you navigated the evolving digital landscape to continue to connect with your audience and keep your content fresh and engaging?

Constant evolution! You must be able to change and adapt very quickly in the digital space. You have to keep people on their toes and get them excited for what's next! Don't do the same thing every day.

Their love story is a captivating tale of resilience and unwavering devotion, serving as a testament to the enduring power of true love.

Having been a witness and touched by their journey, I know this special cover story will warm your heart. It’s a testament to how love can conquer all obstacles and stand the test of time.

How did you meet and what was your first impression of each other?

Jen - We met by chance after a failed matchmaking attempt by two mutual friends. They wanted to set us up, but to no avail. Then, one night in NYC, we met when Joe walked into the bar where I was working at the time (he had ironically just come from a wedding.) We ran into each other again the next night and our friends realized we had already met on our own. Fate?

Joe – Classically, I slid into her DM’s the next day.

(Joe – LOL, Jen – eye roll.)

Can you share with us the most memorable moment leading up to your big day?

Joe – Our engagement party, being surrounded by friends and family and watching both sides become one big Family. It was a small taste of what our wedding would be. Jen – Agreed. We almost skipped the party altogether. Our wedding date had fluctuated so much, we didn’t know if and when we could do an engagement party, but I knew I wanted one. I’m so happy we did it.

What has been the biggest challenge you faced while planning your wedding, how did you overcome it?

Joe – Planning a destination wedding, sight unseen, for 200 people. We were both so relieved when we finally visited the venue. We were also fortunate to have a friend that was familiar with the venue and took time out to meet with us during our first visit and we are forever grateful for his help.

Jen – We literally booked the venue based on Instagram photos! We had such a hard time finding a venue that could fit our guest list, and we knew we wanted everyone together for a full weekend, so destination was it. Other than that, we had nothing specific in mind. Neither of us had ever even been to St. Maarten. Luckily, it turned out to be amazing.

What advice would you give to other couples who are currently planning their own weddings?

Joe – Don’t plan a wedding, elope. LOL!

Jen – Honestly, I was so overwhelmed in the beginning of planning that I did suggest we elope. Thankfully, he knew I didn’t mean it. I would say, do whatever you want, it’s your day. There will be so many opinions and unwarranted pieces of advice. People will tell you not to do things, because they don’t follow “tradition…” do it all. There is no blueprint for what your wedding should be.

What are you looking forward to in this new chapter of your lives?

Joe - Building a home and a family together and establishing our collective roots.

Jen – Same. I am so excited for this next chapter. I have been so nervous for what comes after the wedding and the post-wedding blues, scared that the planning will be over and I’ll no longer be a bride. But, I keep reminding myself that I am lucky enough to be marrying my best friend. Someone I can’t wait to start a family with, build a life with – all the most exciting parts are still ahead of us.

Looking back on your relationship, what is the one word that best describes it?

Joe – Adventurous. There have been no dull moments over the past 6 years. I’m fortunate to have found someone to ride this roller coaster of life with and I couldn’t be happier to stay on this ride.

Jen – Resilient. I don’t think anyone would say their entire relationship or journey to the alter was easy, but I think that’s what builds a strong foundation for a couple. We dated for six years before getting married. No matter the hurdle, our love for each other always won. We learned so much about one another and grew not only as a couple, but as individuals. I know what we’ve built will carry on now into our marriage.

The wedding weekend kicked off with a welcome party on the Pavilion Terrace of Ocean Point Resort in Sint Maarten. Overlooking the ocean, the terrace was adorned with traditional colorful floral arrangements, accented by the "something white" theme. The groom was outfitted in shades of white by Eleventy, and the bride wore a custom Lé Lauriér two-piece set of white liquid beading. A live band played and the night concluded with fire dancing under the stars.

The big day commenced as the stage was set on The Sands, where the couple's loved ones would be seated before crystal-clear waters to witness their vows. Inspired by the natural beauty of the island, they opted to incorporate a beach-chic theme. The florals were white, with touches of baby's breath and greenery, courtesy of florist and event designer, Kaya Events. The morning was filled with love as the bride and bridesmaids relaxed in the bridal suite, with wedding glam by MJ Bridal Artistry. The bride wore a custom robe by Lé Lauriér and details included invitations by Minted Weddings, the bride and groom’s signature scents, and a vintage brooch ornamenting the bride's bouquet, sourced from her mother's wedding gown. Her “something blue” was a bouquet pin and locket, holding a photo of her grandmother - a gift from her mother.

The bridesmaids wore alabaster white satin dresses by Azazie, shoes by Steve Madden, and custom earrings by Dune Jewelry – designed by the bride to incorporate the sand of Maho Beach, where the couple would say, "I do." The bride changed into her custom Justin Alexander gown for the ceremony, which she designed with the team – a plunging neckline, adorned with floral applique, a cascading train, subtle sparkle detail, and a cathedral lace veil. Diamond rental collection, Verstolo, completed her look with diamond drop earrings and a simple tennis bracelet. The groom wore a black tux by The Modern Groom and his groomsmen were in coordinating black suits by The Modern Groom.

Guests breezed from the golden-hour cocktail hour to the ballroom reception. For their second looks, the groom changed into a custom white jacket by Nick's Menswear and the bride opted for a sleek Eva Lendel gown of effortless satin, modest crystal detail, and a crossover split – paired with Bella Belle's crystal "Florence" heels - perfect for their first dance to “At Last” by Etta James. DJ Shortkutz and SMG Entertainment brought the party to life and the groom's brother emceed. Their guests made memories in the photo booth, sipped on “his and hers” signature cocktails, and danced the Caribbean night away.

Led by Yoshiki, X Japan has sold over 30 million albums and singles and sold out the 55,000-seat Tokyo Dome a record-breaking 18 times. He was the first Asian musician to perform at the world’s greatest music halls including Madison Square Garden, Wembley Arena, and solo performances at Carnegie Hall.

In addition to his music activities, he is a fashion icon, the first Japanese male to appear on the cover of Vogue Japan and the designer of his high-fashion kimono brand, YOSHIKIMONO. Yoshiki was chosen to be the first living person to have a Hello Kitty doll named after him, called "yoshikitty". He is also the founder of Yoshiki Foundation America, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public benefit organization, and has long been committed to philanthropy. In 2021, Baccarat selected Yoshiki to design a Harcourt glass in celebration of its 180th anniversary.

His business ventures include the Japanese record label Extasy Records, the Y by Yoshiki wine brand, Y by YOSHIKI champagne with Champagne Pommery, and a partnership with Coca Cola to release two brand-new energy drinks, Real Gold X and Real Gold. His reach extends to everything from a Madame Tussauds wax figure to a dashing kimono-clad superhero created by Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee. And this year, YOSHIKI announced his new high fashion brand MAISON YOSHIKI PARIS, which debuted during Paris Fashion Week.

Yoshiki’s directorial debut, YOSHIKI: UNDER THE SKY, debuted this fall and held its international premier in New York City’s Times Square, featuring a global concert with today's top musical artists. Yoshiki gathered an extraordinary collection of international artists for this film, featuring powerful live performances by The Chainsmokers, St. Vincent, Sarah Brightman, Scorpions, HYDE, SUGIZO, SixTONES, Jane Zhang, Lindsey Stirling, Nicole Scherzinger, and more. Interspersed throughout the film are interviews with Yoshiki about his passion for music, the pain of having lost loved ones, and exploring the healing power of music.

The film's debut comes just one month before Yoshiki will perform his “Yoshiki Classical 10th Anniversary World Tour” with Orchestra 2023 "REQUIEM", headlining shows at Tokyo Garden Theater in Tokyo, Royal Albert Hall in London, Dolby Theater in L.A., and Carnegie Hall in New York. This tour will be the first time a Japanese artist has headlined all these historic venues.

"When I first began working on this project, I didn't know when we would all be able to gather in the same place and share the joy of music,” says Yoshiki. “Coming together with these great artists from around the world, we were able to create a theatrical experience that I'm very proud of. I'm so grateful for everyone who joined us on this journey."

In Memoriam: Anna Sie - A Life of Resilience, Love, and Philanthropy

Anna Sie, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cherished friend, mentor, and dedicated philanthropist, peacefully passed away at her home surrounded by her family on September 20, 2023, at the age of 78.

Anna Sie, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cherished friend, mentor, and dedicated philanthropist, peacefully passed away at her home surrounded by her family on September 20, 2023, at the age of 78.

Anna's remarkable journey began on July 21, 1955, when she and her family disembarked from the MS Vulcania ocean liner in New York City. Like countless immigrants of her time, they carried meager belongings in small suitcases and uncertain futures. With no immediate job prospects, they relied on distant relatives for shelter. Their ten-day voyage from Napoli, Italy marked the start of Anna's remarkable "Cinderella" story. At the tender age of 10, Anna took on responsibilities well beyond her years, cooking, cleaning, and acting as the family's translator for over two years until the arrival of her mother, older sister, and two younger brothers.

Anna was a woman of exceptional beauty, intelligence, charisma, and athleticism. She possessed a quick wit and the voice of an angel. Anna graduated from Watchung Hills Regional High School in New Jersey, where she formed lifelong friendships that spanned over five decades, celebrating milestones and holidays around the world.

While Anna was not afforded the opportunity to attend college, fate intervened when she found employment as a switchboard operator at Microstate Electronics. It was here that she met the love of her life, John J. Sie, who had immigrated from China in 1950 and spent his high school years in a New York City orphanage. Together for 56 years, they raised five wonderful children and, against all odds, lived the quintessential American Dream.

The Sie family experienced frequent relocations as John ventured into various entrepreneurial pursuits. Though the process of uprooting was challenging, Anna remained the unwavering caregiver. She skillfully managed a bustling household of children and their numerous friends, hosting traditional Italian holidays for her father and brothers' families. Anna expertly presided over business dinners and gatherings, offering guidance and support to the countless wives of executives who worked under John's leadership. She was an inspiration and a motherly figure to all who crossed her path.

Anna had an immense passion for movies and played an influential role in John's endeavors when he helped build Showtime and later launched the Starz and Encore channels. Thanks to the collaboration with Dr. John Malone and Peter Barton, Anna and John made substantial contributions to the cable TV industry in the United States, ultimately leading to a comfortable retirement. Her life was replete with travel, culinary pursuits, shopping, house decorating, a love for music, indulging in TV series, and a deep appreciation for movies. She took immense pride in her grandchildren and dedicated herself to a multitude of philanthropic endeavors.

Anna's philanthropic efforts extended to the endowment of the Anna Maglione-Sie Chair in Italian Language & Literature at the University of Denver and the establishment of the prestigious annual Italian Filmmaker Award at the Denver Film Festival. She also endowed the Dan & Boyce Sher Chair at the College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder, providing support to some of the finest Italian opera singers, many of whom hailed from China.

However, Anna's most significant legacy undoubtedly pertains to her granddaughter, Sophia, who happens to have Down syndrome. Drawing upon her own experiences of being treated differently as an immigrant and navigating an interracial marriage, Anna was determined to ensure that Sophia and all individuals with Down syndrome would lead longer, healthier, happier, and more fulfilling lives.

Anna co-founded several affiliated organizations dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with Down syndrome, including the Global Down Syndrome Foundation, the Linda Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome, the Alzheimer's & Cognition Center at the Anschutz Medical Campus, the Anna & John J. Sie Center for Down Syndrome at Children's Hospital Colorado, and the groundbreaking GLOBAL Inclusive Program. This program marked the first post-secondary opportunity for students with intellectual disabilities at a Jesuit University and the second at a Catholic University in the United States.

Anna received numerous awards for her philanthropic work, including Honorary Doctorates in Higher Education from the University of Denver and Humane Letters from the University of Colorado, as well as an Honorary Doctorate from Regis University.

In December of 2013, Anna was diagnosed with stage IV endometrial cancer. With the unwavering support of her loving husband, children, and a dedicated team of scientists and compassionate medical professionals, Anna lived another remarkable decade, filled with an exceptional quality of life. During this time, she created countless moments of happiness and cherished memories for her family and the multitude of individuals whose lives she touched. Anna Sie's legacy will forever shine as a testament to resilience, love, and the transformative power of philanthropy.

Step into the world of fashion, beauty, and creativity as we sit down with the iconic Nigel Barker, a name most of you recognize from the famous TV show, “America’s Next Top Model,” which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. For 17 seasons, Nigel has graced our screens as a prominent judge on the beloved series alongside the iconic Tyra Banks, making an indelible mark on pop culture, fashion, and beauty worldwide.

But Nigel's accomplishments extend far beyond his role on reality TV or photography. With his keen insight and natural abilities, he has transformed various industries, effortlessly moving from photography to directing, producing, writing, furniture and fragrance design, and more. Simultaneously, he dedicates himself to philanthropy, leaving a profound positive impact and inspirational legacy through his remarkable talents.

In BELLA’s exclusive interview, Nigel shares the stories beyond the lens, giving us a glimpse into the world of fashion and photography that he's masterfully navigated, the industry developments he has witnessed throughout his career, and what new ventures await in the future.

Take us on a quick journey through your remarkable career, shedding light on how you transitioned from photography to becoming a significant presence in various creative projects.

I never intended on becoming a model, rather ironically I fell into it after my mother entered me into a televised model search in 1989. Instead of heading straight to college, I took a year off to try my hand at modeling to make a little money and see the world. One year led to two, which led to several more, and instead of a university life, I experienced the ‘School of Life.’

After six or so years traveling and living in cities like Paris, Milan, London, and New York, it became increasingly obvious that a modeling career wasn’t sustainable for me. I am a big guy at 6’4” and as the mid-nineties approached, ushering in the era of androgyny and heroin chic, I knew I would have to pivot. As it happened, I had always been a creative person and had studied fashion design, tailoring, weaving, and pattern-cutting, as well as photography at high school. So, it was pretty clear from working as a model that I would be more fulfilled and have greater staying power if I transitioned from one side of the lens to the other.

For several years I did both modeling and photography, and because of my experience as a model I was able to use that knowledge to help empathize with my subjects and help them relax in front of my lens. Then, of course, came “America’s Next Top Model” (ANTM), the perfect show for me as it was exactly how I got my big break many moons before.

Every day on ANTM was a learning experience. It was impressive to watch and learn how to produce an episode of the show, each week and every cycle getting more efficient, streamlined, and better. From Tyra Banks I learned to multitask; her ability to wear both producer and talent hats was amazing. She oversaw every detail of the show and simultaneously worked as the host and ran her businesses. She inspired me to do the same.

One of my big takeaways from that experience was that if you commit and do the work, great things are possible. The sky is the limit; if you can dream it, do it!

I have tried to never pigeon-hole myself into one creative arena and strived daily to challenge myself, from writing books to creating skateboards and photo booths, designing my own furniture line and fragrances, opening gyms like the DogPound, and directing documentaries and TV commercials to understanding that as a creative leader I can work for any type of company, directing the overall creative direction from marketing to advertising and everything in between.

Rising to fame in the county music circuit, Jessie has captivated audiences worldwide, beginning with her own family. From an early age, her intense passion for music was nurtured by her big Italian family who served as her very first audience.

“I would sit in front of them and sing over and over again,” says Jessie. “I knew I loved making people happy, and I enjoyed the way it felt.”

A few months out of high school, Jessie scored a record deal, put out a top-20 single, earned a gold record, and toured with the Jonas Brothers. Little did she know this was just the start of her journey.

Fast-forward to the present and the talented star has broadened her skills. Inspired by mentors such as Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, and Selena Quintanilla, Jessie has successfully—and harmoniously—created an entire brand.

Jessie’s latest cookbook will be released in early October and her fashion brand, Kittenish, is currently collaborating with Flag & Anthem, a fashion brand she’s been a fan of for quite some time.

We sat down with the star for an in-depth conversation centered around her career both on and off the stage, and the most important life lesson she’s learned.

With all that you have happening right now—new music, a new cookbook—would you say you’re living your childhood dream?

Absolutely! I’m living it above and beyond what I ever thought I would be doing. I thought I’d just be making music;, I never dreamt I’d be writing cookbooks and designing clothes. I’m so grateful.

Denim Suit: Love Melody -

What can readers discover in your new cookbook? Are there any recipes that hold personal significance?

I’ve loved all my books but this one is exciting for me because it encompasses the last few years of my life; it feels more personal. It contains a lot of my travel journeys and things I took away from my trips to Europe, Italy, and Greece.  I’m half Italian, and half Greek, and cooking alongside amazing chefs was inspirational.

When COVID happened, we started a garden, got chickens, and tried to get back to that homegrown life that inspired many of my recipes to be greener and cleaner. There are also warm chocolate chip cookies thrown in, so there’s ‘Louisiana Jess’ in there but also the clean Mediterranean recipes as well.

Laughter, Fashion, and Life Lessons: Carson Kressley on Success and Staying True to Yourself

With his eclectic taste and infectious personality, Carson Kressley rose to fame in the early 2000s with the hit show, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” Little did he know, this was the start of an incredible journey.

With his eclectic taste and infectious personality, Carson Kressley rose to fame in the early 2000s with the hit show, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” Little did he know, this was the start of an incredible journey.

Before taking the TV world by storm, Carson was happily ensconced in the world of New York City fashion, working for one of the most iconic brands, Ralph Lauren, a company he says he “always envisioned being a part of.”

“I had a job with a non-profit and that was great, but I really wanted to eat and buy a new pair of shoes,” jokes Carson. “I made a list of companies whose products and culture resonated with me, and Ralph Lauren was at the top of that list.” #

Despite not having much experience in the industry except for a love of clothing and its symbolism, Carson landed a job not long out of college with the renowned fashion company.

“I tell people it was like ‘The Devil Wears Prada …’ I was somebody’s assistant, got people’s lunches, picked up samples, and drove around in a black Town Car, but with really nice people who were also very preppy,” says Carson.

Since the world first fell in love with Carson, he’s had the opportunity to be a part of many great projects, both on-screen and off. He is a fierce supporter of the younger generation and aligns himself with organizations where he can help make a difference. “I remember my struggle, and anything I can do to make their pathway in the world a little bit easier, I think is valuable,” explains Carson.

Fascinated by Carson’s story and his passion for life, we sat down with the star to talk about his road to success and the ways in which he is helping others live a stylish life they love.

As a kid, did you ever envision you’d be where you are today?

I have always loved design, but it was not so much in the fashion space as the architectural space. I was constantly doodling houses, floor plans, and landscaping designs. I thought for sure I was going to grow up and become an architect like Mike Brady on “The Brady Bunch”! I thought, that's a great job, and then at some point I realized you had to be really good at math, so I was like ‘OK, next!’ I am not a math person!

I didn't know what I wanted to do at all, even through college. I had no idea what I was going to do the next Tuesday, so I just followed my heart. I knew I wanted to live in New York City, so the day after graduation I had a job lined up—not a dream job, but a job—and moved to Manhattan immediately. I think the city was a great catalyst in giving me amazing opportunities and opened my eyes to a variety of things I could do and that eventually led me to Ralph Lauren.

So, moving to New York City set you on the path you were meant to follow?

Absolutely! Moving to New York right away seemed exciting and a little bit scary, but it's the place where possibilities seem unlimited and that's very much my attitude. I know some people have Impostor Syndrome—I have the opposite! I thought, I'm going to go to New York, I can do anything I want, and I can be anyone I want, and that mindset let me become who I was meant to be.

“Embracing the Present” Dr. Shefali’s Mantra for a Fulfilling Life

Only a few months into the New Year, and Dr. Shefali Tsabary, a world-renowned clinical psychologist, New York Times best-selling author, and international speaker, is continuing her mission as an outspoken advocate for parenting and relationships.

By Alexandra Anastasio

Only a few months into the New Year, and Dr. Shefali Tsabary, a world-renowned clinical psychologist, New York Times best-selling author, and international speaker, is continuing her mission as an outspoken advocate for parenting and relationships.

She recently released her fifth book, “The Parenting Map,” a philosophy she is not only well versed in, but one she is fiercely passionate about sharing with other parents.

Don’t miss a beat! Click HERE to become a BELLA Insider!

While her previous books on the subject are more conceptual, this one lays out a “how-to” of conscious parenting, giving parents a step-by-step strategy and map to follow so that they have concrete guidance and direction during times of inevitable confusion and stress.

“I believe this book will help millions of parents achieve their most cherished goal, which is to have a deep connection with their children,” explains Dr. Shefali.

Challenging the traditional parenting pattern stems from Dr. Shefali’s work as a psychologist as well as being a parent herself. It is here she developed the philosophy of conscious parenting.

“I began to implement it into my own parenting and witnessed its power to shift my dynamic with my child instantly.”

Along with her teachings on the subject, Dr. Shefali is a staunch advocate for the importance of finding an internal connection within us, something she says isessential for leading a fulfilling and meaningful life. Without it, we will always feel restless and disconnected regardless of the external things we try to fill our liveswith, she explains.

Fascinated by Dr. Shefali’s teachings and her approach to conscious parenting, we sat down with her for an in-depth conversation to learn more about her work, her personal experiences, the challenges she faces, and the ways in which she is working to make a difference within the parenting space.

You are one of the most respected names in the parenting space. What led you down this path?

As a psychologist, I worked with innumerable adults in therapy and began to see how our early foundational years have such a vast and lasting impact on our entirelives. This led me to have a profound interest in the field of early childhood and parenting. Once I became a mother myself, this passion grew to the point of writing books about the topic. All of this purpose grew from my own awareness of the crucial importance of these early years and how, if we are not conscious, we can limit our children’s capacity to be their best selves.

My books were provocative to parents at first as they challenged the traditional parenting paradigm and were ignored. It was only when Oprah picked up my work and recognized their value that my message of conscious parenting began to spread.

Immersed in the world of dance from a young age (her mom has owned a ballet school for over 40 years), Tracy moved to New York at the age of 18 to follow her dream of becoming a professional ballerina. Once there, she was faced with a harsh reality as she struggled with her weight. While she possessed the talent, Tracy was told she did not have the body for dance.

Franco Lacosta: The Most Enchanting Human on Earth

, Franco Lacosta’s fan base perfectly encompasses just how incredible the charming visionary, photographer, stylist, curator, creative director, producer, and artist really is.

“WE NEED MORE FRANCO, ICON FRANCO LACOSTA, FRANCO IS THE MAIN CHARACTER, FRANCO NEEDS HIS OWN SPINOFF, FRANCO IS A BALL OF ELECTRICITY, FRANCO IS THE REAL STAR...”

From Twitter fans to the creators of “The Bachelor” franchise, Franco Lacosta’s fan base perfectly encompasses just how incredible the charming visionary, photographer, stylist, curator, creative director, producer, and artist really is.The power of manifestation is a magnetic force. I have been following Franco’s journey for years, always hoping to learn from such an iconic, incredible being. When the universe brought us together, I welcomed the sign with open arms, and did exactly what I once longed to do... learn. I sat down with Franco at one of his favorite lunchtime spots, The French Bistro, LouLou’s, in New York City, where he also resides. Although Franco was born in New York, the artist was raised in Puerto Rico, in the southern part of the island between the beach and the mountains. Surrounded by such beauty in his hometown, Franco discovered a love for nature, the Amazon, and protecting the planet. He considers himself a huge agent of change and feels a big responsibility for changing the landscape vibrationally in which we live, how we live, and how we treat others. The man of many talents started working at the young and inspired age of 7. That’s when Franco began taking photos of people, which he did not do for money, but simply because he loved how it made him and others feel. A year later, his mother’s friend recognized his love for makeup and beauty. The young, ambitious boy we now know as the iconic Franco Lacosta became a beauty consultant at the early age of 8. Franco views these experiences as his first jobs, because it taught him how to connect with people, to style, and how to heal the—and to use fashion, makeup, and photography as his medium to empower them.“There was only one of me,” Franco explains about being the “eccentric and creative” kid in town. He was ambitious to learn. He was told his whole life that he had to narrow down his focus, but Franco believes that being multifaceted is so much more powerful. Indeed, it was young Franco’s hunger for knowledge that led way to him become multifaceted as an adult. Franco believes that being multifaceted and challenging our talent in a dynamic manner is a huge asset in today’s world. Humbly, he’s had a wealth of experiences in design, photography, and directing, all the way to becoming a relationship expert. This has all become part of Franco’s metaverse. The level of success Franco achieved is all due to his never-ending passion and imagination. The trajectory of his career was unconventional, but he knew he would always be someone of importance. To the successful Renaissance man, “importance” is not defined by financial status, but by the way you make your mark on the world, Franco explains. We could all take a lesson on living with purpose, from the enchanting Franco Lacosta.
How did your childhood inform the way you pursued your dreams later in life?
I loved books, art, dance, and music. I spent a lot of time with the elderly because they have so many stories to tell, thanks to the storytelling in all these genres and the rich history of my ancestors in Latin American and Puerto Rican culture. There’s also the heritage, the adornment and femininity of women, and the uber confidence of the Latin man... just the passion for color and life.I was very inventive, to the point where people would call me a master storyteller. They would say, “Where did you go this weekend?” and I would say, “I went to Paris, I took a canoe... and there were sharks, but they didn’t touch me. And I rowed all the way to Île Saint-Louis... and traveled the city.”My imagination was wide open, and my mother fed me more by getting me subscriptions to National Geographic, Cosmopolitan, and Vogue. These publications shaped my thinking and expanded my universe. National Geographic was my cultural experience—the visual narrative and stories gave me a sense of the world at large... cultures, their people, their food, their spiritual practices. I loved Cosmopolitan because I discovered the supermodel, I learned about women’s orgasms, it gave me a way to connect deeper to the female. Maybe that was making me more gay [laughs]! Vogue gave me the ultimate gift—it was the pinnacle of fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. I learned about teamwork and understood the editorial work. It is about hair, makeup, model, location. I had a crush on Paulina Porizkova, Linda Evangelista, and Cindy Crawford. Their covers changed my life. I wanted to mimic those photos. I learned to create the perfect picture, ideas, composition, space, lighting, facial structure, movement... “How to Make a Star 101!”My grandfather knew I was highly creative. He gave me my first camera when I was 7 years old, and I was always taking photos. I was doing everyone’s makeup... my sister, cousins, everyone. I loved having the power to make women feel beautiful. That was my motivation for everything moving forward. Although I couldn’t afford makeup at a young age, I would find ways to create it myself. I would squeeze mango and rub it on my face for glowing skin and mix Vaseline with Kool Aid to make lipstick and blush. I think I invented the lip plumper—I would mix jalapeño pepper with Vaseline to make bigger lips. I would put Coca-Cola in my hair to spike it up and use powder from butterfly wings to create a shimmery eye shadow. I put butterfly dust on everybody, I just wanted to turn everyone into a supermodel. What was your journey in becoming a television icon?I had a strategy. Discovering your gift, honing in on your talents, and learning the foundation. I wanted to learn everything, so when people asked, I was able to offer myself.I got my first reality show on the Style Network. It was a competition to style Rachel Hunter for a red-carpet award ceremony. Ironically, it was something I had been doing my entire life. It proved further that I was able to help people discover their brand. Soon after, I went to a party where a director of NBC saw me engaging with a few women. He came up to me and asked what I do, and immediately asked me if I wanted my own beauty segment where I could transform women into anything I wanted. It allowed me to become the producer of my own segments, which was such a gift. I became co-founder of Q Model Management. I learned to develop talent. I created many stars. My talent discovery became the faces of L’Oréal, Gucci, and Valentino. It led to career opportunities that allowed me to dive into my network of designers, brands, stylists, jewelers, locations, and hairdressers. Because of my network, I was providing all the clothing for the segments, from Christian Dior to Jean Paul Gaultier, to Naeem Khan. People trusted that my vision would be on brand.Shortly after, I got a phone call. It was someone from Model Latina. Model Latina was really a cross between “America’s Next Top Model” and “Apprentice.” I met with Maria Perez Brown who ended up becoming my mentor. She hired me as the judge and creative director of that show. She led me to maneuver my way into many different roles, becoming a true magician at each one. Maria allowed me to create a look for the show that not only proved my commitment and efficiency but became a catalyst for my career.Following that, I got a call from “America’s Next Top Model.” I was expanding my portfolio. At this point, I could do it all. They needed a refresh, so I came in as a photographer and creative director. I did that for a few years, and then “The Bachelor” called.
You started off as a photographer in “The Bachelor” franchise, which made way for so many roles in the show. How was your experience in becoming such a huge part of this ABC family?“The Bachelor” called at the perfect time. They loved my creative energy and my execution skills. I’m very honored people want to see more of me in the franchise [laughs]. This international phenomenon has a really great team, and they trust me to help bring beauty and entertainment to the show. I really loved it and took on the challenge. Most of the time I was behind the scenes, but then the producers wanted me on screen. I was nervous, but it opened up a whole new world for me. I was lucky to be on camera. From that point on I was really Franco Lacosta—the Renaissance man. When I come up with an idea, they would go, “Yes, yes, yes.” Frankly, I’ve been very spoiled, they “yes” me to death! I am so humbled and blessed to say I’ve been able to do everything I’ve wanted to do. And the best is still to come. Can you expand on who influenced your career path?I’m a product of powerful collectives. Oprah Winfrey taught me the power of my brand and how to protect my integrity. Starting with Gianfranco Ferré who gave me my first design opportunity in Milan, which led to him making me his brand ambassador. He said my sense of color was “orgasmic.” Ives Saint Laurent found me very exotic. He opened my world to understated elegance and tailoring. While I chose to study art history, design, and photography at Pratt Institute in New York City, I was also working in guest services at the Paramount Hotel for Ian Schrager. With him I learned the art of architecture; the importance of space and aesthetics, including lighting and furniture design; and the value of hospitality experiences.Another great figure was Antonio Lopez, who I believe paved the way for me. He was the best fashion illustrator of all time. He created the supermodel. He gave life to these designs. Everyone I met in Europe told me I reminded them of Antonio, including Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld, who loved Antonio and his work.I became an accidental model thanks to French photographer, Bettina Rheims. Her photos of me landed in Italian Vogue and all over Europe. That led me to work with Ellen von Unwerth. She photographed me for Italian Vogue with Carla Bruni, Monica Bellucci, and Laetitia Casta. During my days in London, I met Isabella Blow, who had a huge impact on my work and my life. She discovered Alexander McQueen. She was a genius; she loved my visions.I’m always attracting the eccentric and big thinkers. Michelle Collins is one of these people. She is the president and CEO of A Non-Agency. As we collaborate, I learn not only about innovation and technology, but I have been able to use my curatorial skills and talent radar. The moment I met her we connected, and I wanted to become an asset to her because I believe in her vision.I’ve been blessed to learn from the best people. It gave me so much confidence...that’s actually the first time I’ve ever admitted that. I understood that it is all about your team. I placed myself in situations in which I was needed and couldn’t be replaced. I knew my value and what I brought to my relationships, partnerships, and collaborations. You know who you can and can’t work with. A friend of mine always says, “If I can’t go on vacation with you, I can’t work with you.”
How is your relationship with your daughter, and how does she react to having such an influential father figure in so many different lights? It’s funny sometimes. At her graduation, people were coming up to her, “I didn’t know that was your dad!” She laughs. I think it’s cool for her to see me being myself so that she can follow in the same direction. I definitely have a fan in her. When she was born, I took a back seat to my career in order to give her the right energy and attention. Carmen is 15 now, and she is a rebel...such a bad-ass. At 15, they don’t really want to hang out with their parents anymore, but she’s amazing. I want her to have experiences; being 15 in New York can become redundant. I want her to travel the world and have a broader sense of culture. I like to take her on incredible adventures to Costa Rica, Barcelona, or even Mexico, where she can connect with nature, whether that be zip-lining or horseback riding. She’s very into writing, she has a great personal style, and she loves design and the theatre. She’s very kind and has a generous heart. I tell her she can be anything she wants to be, and to dream big.Kindness seems to be your mantra. How do you use your incredible passion and energy to help those around you?By being a disrupter, a true influencer. If I don’t disrupt, how does change occur? When does change occur? When are new voices heard? There’s always a way—I’m always reaching someone. There’s always a way to elevate. Whether it’s me taking a portrait of someone or curating a space, my goal is for everyone to always feel their most beautiful and for the space I create to be of the highest frequency, which is a reflection of me. I get messages about people having bad days, or wanting to hurt themselves, who then say that they saw me, and I brought back a certain energy to their lives. They ask me if I have time to talk, and I’m like, “Absolutely I do, let’s talk!”I’m so grateful that I’m able to change someone’s perspective... to be able to make someone feel seen, heard, and cared for is the ultimate power. When you aren’t working as a multifaceted man of many talents, how do you spend your free time?Honestly, I don’t get a ton of free time between my philanthropic work for Coalition for the Homeless, being a parent, and my television work. But, when I do, I paint, write, and draw. I’m currently working on two new design projects, a textile and a home collection. I’m also writing two books and developing new content for television. I love to go to museums and travel as much as I can... and eat like a pig [laughs].What would 7-year-old Franco who just got his first camera say looking at himself now?Oh wow, he would say, “I can’t wait for what’s next!” And I would tell him now to keep going. To think bigger and see yourself winning an Oscar, an Emmy—everything. I’ve done it, but I’m not done yet. There’s still so much more to do.You mentioned you love to paint. I once did a painting meditation where we recognized colors as feelings. What color would you use to describe your feelings about working with BELLA on this project?Well, I love color. White is a very powerful color; Yves Klein blue is also a powerful color. But something about pink comes to my mind. Pink is ever growing; it is growth forever. I use bright pink as an accent in all my work. It is my signature color. I limit myself when I speak about pink, it means something.Keeping the mind clean is so important to creative flow. How do you incorporate wellness into your life?I am healing energy. I do a lot of hot yoga and meditation so that I can replenish my energy. I eat as healthy as I can and seek to nourish my highest self with shamanic rituals and deep ritualistic practice. I light a lot of candles, burn incense, and am deeply connected to my ancestors. Being sacred is part of my path and is intricate in my purpose. What does “Life Is BELLA” mean to you? That’s my ethos. Life is BELLA. I see BELLA in everything. We need more BELLA in everyone’s life. It is inspiration, love, gratitude. Living with purpose is BELLA.
