Actress Laila Odom Spices Things Up In Lifetime's "Salt-N-Pepa" Biopic

By Kelly Bellucci

Looking to add a little spice to your life? Laila Odom is here to bring you a healthy sprinkling of ‘Pepa’ this spring!

On Saturday, May 30th, actress and producer Laila Odom will star as ‘Pepa’ in Lifetime’s Salt-N-Pepa television special. The two-night event follows the story of college students Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton as they transform their friendship into a notorious 80’s hip-hop duo.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Odom has dedicated herself to the art of acting, and continues to impress audiences everywhere with her talent. The young starlet is also known for The Bobby Debarge Story, Game Shakers, Phantom Halo, and Undercover Brother 2. Additionally, Odom is a regular contributor to the LOL Network founded by comedian Kevin Hart.

Eager to learn more about the actress and her upcoming role as ‘Pepa’, BELLA connected with Laila Odom herself…

Can you tell me a little more about Lifetime’s Salt-N-Pepa biopic?

Lifetime's Salt-N-Pepa biopic focuses mainly on the friendship that Cheryl (Salt) and Sandra (Pepa) share, highlighting the high's and the low's. The two-night event combines the group’s personal life struggles and accomplishments from when they met in college, to the monumental re-unite performance for VH1.

How did you prepare for your role as ‘Pepa’?

I prepared for the role of ‘Pepa’, by watching ALL the Salt-N-Pepa performances and interviews! I was blessed to spend time with Pepa herself before we started shooting and a bit while on set.

Out of all the roles you have ever played, do you have a favorite? If so, why that role?

By far, ‘Pepa’ is my favorite role to play!! I loved being able to act, dance and rap! Hands down dream role.

What is it like working as a contributor for the LOL Network?

Becoming a contributor for Kevin Hart's LOL Network was truly a surprise! It started off as Instagram videos. My friend Woody McClain started doing some sketches called "Stories with Kev”, which were re-enactments of Hart's stand-up where I play his wife. Those sketches ended up getting the attention of Kevin's LOL Network.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in the TV/Film industry?

My advice for anyone wanting to start a career in the TV/Film industry is to study the craft! It's much easier to reach out to people and get advice or even an opportunity.
