Captivating Charleston in the Fall

Charleston, South Carolina, consistently voted the number one travel destination in the country, never fails to charm. A short excursion to the Holy City is a must do for history lovers and hungry foodies. Fall is the absolutely perfect time to visit, when the weather clocks in at around a sunny 72 degrees.

The cuisine in Charleston is exquisite. Hotels follow suit, and the shopping is inspired.  Several incredible hotel options are conveniently located right in the center of the historic district, where walking everywhere is easy, and cobblestones are prevalent. Check out The Spectator, Hotel Bennett, The Dewberry Charleston, the art centric Vendue and the newish Pinch. The Moxy is a choice for those who want a hipster vibe, (with cool coffee shop blum next door). It’s a reasonable stay and just a short Uber from downtown.

King Street rules for boutiques, everything from Gucci to Louis Vuitton, to Veronica Beard to Billy Reid.  Jewelry aficionados will love Croghan’s Jewel Box, who’s been on the street for 100 years. Antique hunters will be dazzled by George C. Birlant & Co. also celebrating over 100 years on King Street with their extensive collection of English antiques and silver. King also offers Warby Parker, Love Shack Fancy, Madewell, and a plethora of local fashion boutiques. The legendary   Hampden Clothing features Khaite, Marni, Rachel Comey, Christopher John Rogers, and Isabel Marant. Sneaker freaks will love popping into Golden Goose. Pick up gorgeous new pajamas at Lake, shop for footwear at Shoes on King and indulge in artisan chocolates at the tiny but stunning Chocolat by Adam Turoni.

The fine dining scene is Charleston is renowned, multi-cultural and varied, best to research before you go and make reservations in advance. Look for recommendations on websites like The Infatuation, Eater Charleston, Charleston City Paper and Conde Nast Traveler, as the plentiful restaurant and bar scene is constantly changing. Rooftop bars abound, and seafood and Southern specialties are always creatively executed.

Casual made-from-scratch bites in a chic European wine bar/deli atmosphere are to be had at Babas on Meeting or Babas on Cannon. Grab a French pastry and a latte at La Patisserie at the Hotel Bennett and enjoy them outside in the sunshine.  For dessert walk to Off Track which features locally sourced, handmade ice cream or stop into Carmella’s Italian Dessert Bar, a lively scene for a piece of pecan cheesecake or cannoli.

Living history reigns supreme in Charleston, as a result of the strictest historical preservation laws in the country. Take a horse-drawn tour in an open-air carriage, where you’ll wind through the neighborhood learning about the 18th and 19th century homes -- most are illuminated by flickering gas lanterns and show off lush, private gardens. Chandeliers sparkle inside, and The Battery by night is just magical. The thirteen colorful houses of Rainbow Row, circa 1740, should not be missed for the ultimate ‘gram.

A short drive to the beach in Fall is easy and uncrowded. For Hampton’s vibes, visit Sullivan’s Island or Isle of Palms, where you’ll have the magnificent unspoiled beach to yourself, with plenty of outdoor dining choices and the chance to enjoy a spectacular sunset.
