All Aboard: How to Spend a Weekend in Napa Valley

The Napa Valley Wine Train is a nostalgic, stress-free way to explore some of the regions most esteemed wineries

Napa Valley is one of the world’s most prestigious destinations for vino lovers. Whether you’re a casual wine drinker or a sophisticated connoisseur, northern California’s wine country is the perfect escape.

Kick off your weekend by checking into the quaint River Terrace Inn, overlooking the famed Napa River. This sweet pet-friendly hotel is relaxed elegance at its finest, blending neutral tones and rustic touches for a true NorCal vibe. Spacious rooms have large spa bathrooms with jetted tubs for two – ideal for unwinding after an afternoon of wineries.

There’s plenty to explore on-property, as well. Nosh on charcuterie or sip on a cocktail at the downstairs ALBA restaurant and kitchen before your dinner reso. A serene outdoor space offers more gorgeous views of the river, and connects to a convenient walking path bridging the nearby Oxbow Public Market and casual Gott’s Roadsides. There’s also the Oprah Winfrey approved Model Bakery, where you won’t want to sleep on the English muffins (O’s reported favorite) and Stumptown Coffee. Those curious about local wine tastings can also check out the nearby Vintners Collective.

The Noble House Hotels & Resorts owned property is a stones throw from fellow portfolio member the Napa Valley Wine Train, which is the most charming – and fun – way to explore the region. The classic locomotive steam whistle, which began operating back in 1864, channels the glamorous era of 20th century train travel with an updated twist. The train is also ideal for the planning averse: the experts have already done the work for you.

The refurbished train is contemporary opulence – each car offering a different, but delightful, experience: on the main train, a Chandon outfitted car transports guests to the mediterranean with its floral citrus decor and sumptuous blue velvet seats, while the glass roofed Vista Dome offers sweeping views of the scenery over a chef cooked meal. The sweetest photo opp, however, is the open air car where guests can mix and mingle over red, white or rosé.

The 36-mile Wine Train stops at a number of vineyards in the iconic towns of Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford, and St. Helena, and is arguably the most convenient way to winery hop.

The Wine Train’s Legacy Experience is among the most immersive options, taking guests on a full six-hour journey in elegant Pullman Rail Cars. The four course lunch (don’t miss the risotto) and optional wine pairings – there’s up to 11, if you’re up for it – were a curated match in heaven.

The beauty of the Wine Train is one can choose their own adventure: for the light drinkers, sip a a glass or two on-board and save room for the winery tastings – or indulge in the curated flights put together by the on-board team, enjoying the best of both worlds.

Seated tastings were hosted in St. Helena at both Charles Krug, and our personal highlight – V. Sattui. The latter transported us to Tuscany thanks to a romantic moss-covered brick building, while a room adorned with wine barrels served as host for 30 minute tasting experience. The property dates back to 1885, when Mr. Vittorio Sattui immigrated from Genoa, Italy – and the family-owned winery has continued to grow and expand over the last 140 years. The on-site artisan deli is also a treat, and is a marvellous little shop to load up on cheese, charcuterie, olives and other goodies before heading back to the train.

Wrap up your weekend with an early morning hot air balloon, one of the most unforgettable experiences of our weekend getaway. Balloons Above the Valley has been taking visitors up and away since 1976, and offers the ultimate floating tour of gorgeous Napa.

Should you find yourself with an extra day in the region, hop in an Uber over to Yountville’s Washington Street – home to the original Bouchon Restaurant and bakery of the same name. The picturesque neighborhood is also where you’ll find the beautiful Restoration Hardware restaurant and tasting room, worth a gander even if you aren’t dining.
