Kerry Washington Defines Modern Elegance in Custom SIMKHAI at the Met Gala
The steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art witnessed a masterclass in contemporary tailoring as actress Kerry Washington graced the 2025 Met Gala in a breathtaking custom SIMKHAI ensemble. Attending alongside SIMKHAI’s Creative Director, Jonathan Simkhai, whose own custom men’s look exuded sophisticated charm, Washington perfectly embodied the evening’s exhibition theme, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," with a look that seamlessly blended tradition and innovation.

Washington’s bespoke SIMKHAI creation was a study in contrasts, featuring a deconstructed tailored jacket paired with a dreamy tea-length sheer tulle skirt. The jacket, a testament to classic menswear tailoring techniques, was meticulously hand-constructed from an ivory twill with a luxurious satin lapel. Its plunging front and dramatic cutaway back sculpted an accentuated hourglass silhouette, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship inherent in the SIMKHAI studio.
The juxtaposition of the structured jacket with the ethereal A-line, tea-length tulle skirt created a captivating visual narrative. Crafted from a sheer mesh voile, the skirt possessed a soft yet undeniably structured form, its deconstructed style subtly echoing the shape of a crinoline. In a nod to often-hidden atelier techniques, horsehair was incorporated into the hem, providing both shape and structure to the delicate fabric. Completing the look was the chic Simkhai Ameera silver metal clutch bag, a sleek and modern accessory.
Adding a whimsical yet refined touch was a custom ivory felt hat from Binata Millinery. Crafted by hand by Creative Director Rowell Concepcion, the hat featured a delicate satin ribbon trim and was expertly hand-dyed to perfectly complement the pantone of the SIMKHAI ensemble. This thoughtful detail served as a subtle yet stylish nod to the dandy movement, further elevating Washington’s already striking appearance.

Jonathan Simkhai himself looked equally dapper in a custom SIMKHAI men’s suit crafted from luxurious buttercream and ivory British wool. The double-breasted buttercream jacket featured sharp peak lapels and a sophisticated cummerbund wrap closure, paired effortlessly with ivory slim-cut flat front pants. A silk Simkhai logo pocket square provided the perfect finishing touch to his impeccably tailored look.
