For Better Health, Rise With The Sun
By Jennifer Walsh
It’s spring and we couldn’t be more excited for the longer and warmer days ahead. Many people begin to shift their workouts to time outside vs. indoors at the gym. Even more are willing to get up earlier to catch the first rays of sunlight to kick off their days.
Did you know that rising with the sun and choosing to get your body moving outdoors at that time boasts a multitude of health benefits? Let’s break down some of the most impactful wellness perks of rising and working out at dawn.
It Impacts Your Circadian Rhythm
That’s your body’s internal biological clock that regulates your sleep-wake cycle, hormone production, and other bodily functions. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that exposure to bright light in the morning significantly improved sleep quality and mood in individuals with insomnia. The study also found that participants who were exposed to bright light in the morning had a better circadian rhythm than those who were not exposed to light in the morning.
Crystal-Clear Eye Health
A study published in the Journal of Biological Rhythms found that exposure to blue light in the morning improved circadian rhythm and alertness in healthy individuals. The study also found that blue light exposure reduced the production of melatonin, which is known to help protect our eyes from conditions like macular degeneration and cataracts.
It Kicks Up Your Cardio Health
A study published in the American Journal of Hypertension found that working out in the morning can help significantly reduce blood pressure in individuals with hypertension. The study also concluded that morning exercise may be an effective nonpharmacological intervention for reducing blood pressure.
