In the competitive world of modeling, what challenges have you faced as an international model, and how have you overcome them?

The most important challenge in the competitive world of international modeling is one of a technical matter requiring one to obtain legal work documents ensuring the right to work in any given country. In the case of the United States, a 01B Visa is required. The test of law is whether a model fulfills the need in the marketplace than cannot be filled by an existing citizen. Therein lies the fierce competition, as the United States is where you want to work. The old saying of, "If you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere,” ramps up the competition. Many models are disappointed to be turned away.

Also, in my age category, there are very few models worldwide. To be signed on by such a powerhouse as FORD MODELS NY for a three-year contract at the age of 66 is virtually unheard of and very exciting.

Can you share a defining moment or experience that has shaped your career and personal growth as a model?

About two years ago I was shooting with a fabulous team consisting of a photographer, makeup artist, hair stylist, and fashion stylist - a team I respect to this day for their quality of work and creative spirit.  It was early in the shoot process when the fashion stylist, Felicia Ann Ryan, turned to me and said "Hanya, you are the future of fashion.'' I was stopped in my tracks at her words. A short time after, Felica wrote a piece in celebration of International Women's Day, stating that “Hanya helped inspire me to write this piece, ‘The Future of Fashion.’” She told me, “In ‘The Future of Fashion,’ I narrate my inner dialogue regarding age and the industry while confronting many of my own long-standing questions that arose after working with Hanya. A future to look forward to, not just in Fashion, but for us."

The depth of this was not lost on me.  I understood how we are challenged by the aging process and our relevance in the world. When the words sank in, I understood how important it was to have a positive role model for all women, not only in my age category, but even more importantly for all the young women growing up around me. This is the WHY of what I do in my career as a model.

What advice would you give aspiring models who are looking to break into the international scene and make a lasting impact?

Stay true to yourself, know who you are, and know what you want. Be kind, generous, and humble because that is what people will remember about you. The lasting impression of how you make people feel once you leave the room is what creates success, not only in the modeling world, but in life. And remember to always remain professional, this is a business.

In addition to your modeling career, you are also a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion. How do you use your platform to promote these values and create positive change in the industry?

I am impassioned by many facets of philanthropy. Inclusion and diversity are a way of life. Whenever asked to contribute to fashion shows that uplift the messaging about inclusion and diversity, I am always there, donating my time, talent, and my money. Giving back to charities that build strong bridges for abused women and children is a part of my inner fabric. I have been on executive boards for years that work tirelessly at raising funds to build homes and shelter for those in need, as well as education and schooling. This is beyond important to me and will continue to be so for the rest of my life. To give is to get back and there is no greater gift.

Is there any message or words of wisdom you would like to share with our readers who may be facing challenges or trying to exceed expectations in their own lives?

Absolutely everyone faces challenges. No matter what it may seem like on the outside, you never know what's happening on the inside. Don't try to live up to anybody else's standards. Have the courage to be true to yourself and to live a life that shows empathy for those around you. Know what your core values are, as they will serve as your foundation to build your life upon. The stronger the foundation, the better the build. Your life is a treasure and a gift, so never let anyone rob you of those gifts. Know your value, your power, and your ability to change things for the better. You are not where you came from, but rather who you are yet to become. Remember this, your best days are still ahead of you.

Much love and respect, HANYA.
