When I was about 5 years old, my parents saw how much I loved dancing and singing so they put me in all kinds of lessons. That grew and eventually I got an acting agent but I was writing songs as well. My dad used to play drums and, when I would ask him about how to pursue a career in music, he phoned up someone he knew back in the day: the late and great Ronnie Hawkins. He was the best. So funny and really honest about the industry. He was a huge supporter of mine and had me sing at an event where I met another mentor of mine, Amy Sky. I love Amy and I’m so grateful for all of her guidance. She really helped me out with not only the music side, but also understanding how the business side worked.
What inspired the remixes of your original anthem, "Waking up in California?
One day I was listening to Jordan aka Alias One's music and really loved what he was doing. I have never done a remix before, and thought it’d be cool to do a remix with him!
Tell us about your creative process and where you draw inspiration from.
We live in a complicated and high-energy world where we are affected by many things all the time, and I do my best to remain open to influence all around me. If something strikes me and resonates with me, it might find its way into a song. One thing is for sure, though: all of my songs come from an honest and authentic place inside me, and each and every one means a lot to me.
Who is your ideal artist to collaborate with in the future and why?
Oh, wow. There are so many I would love to collaborate with! First would be Taylor Swift. I have been a big fan of hers and love everything she has been doing. That would be a dream. I’d also love to collaborate with fellow Canadian, The Weeknd. It's also a dream of mine to tour with Coldplay -- just putting that out there!
