The Black Excellence Brunch Honors Sanaa Lathan on Martha’s Vineyard
For the first time since its inception in 2017, The Black Excellence Brunch took place in Martha’s Vineyard earlier this month. Camille Rose Founder and CEO Janell Stephensteamed up with Trell Thomas of Black Excellence Brunch this past Saturday, Aug. 9, for the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival.
THE MVAAFF, an Oscar-qualifying annual film festival in the short film category, was established in 2002 by Run & Shoot Filmworks principals Floyd and Stephanie Rance. The Film Festival ran from Aug. 2-10, 2024, with an impressive slate of films, documentaries, panel discussions, and exclusive events focused on amplifying Black voices, storytelling, and culture.
The exclusive event brought together vibrant celebrations of culture, community, and achievement to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of successful black professionals who continue to break barriers and set new standards of excellence.
The highly anticipated All-White Attire affair honored actor, director, and activist Sanaa Lathan, recognizing her significant achievements in the film industry and the community. Held at the Atria in Edgartown, Mass., the brunch embraced the spirit of Black Excellence, bringing together nearly 150 guests, including notable figures such as Will Packer, Uzo Aduba, Sylvia Obell, and Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, Jotaka Eddy, former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Kim Kimble, Raheem DeVaughn, and Tina Mabry.
This gathering fostered connections within the community and honored the enduring legacy of Black excellence. The Black Excellence Brunch is more than just an event—it’s a movement dedicated to celebrating Black professionals who make significant impacts in their industries yet often go under-recognized. This event was a testament to the ongoing commitment of the Black Excellence Brunch to honor the past while inspiring the future.
The Shaunta Brand curated a sophisticated atmosphere enhanced with an airy décor of floral arrangements throughout. HULU provided a flower station, where guests could “Give Themselves Flowers” by creating their bouquet to take home. The menu featured southern cuisine classics such as, chicken and waffles, applewood-smoked bacon, and watermelon and feta salad, accompanied by specialty Limonata cocktails, sponsored by Ciroc.
Trell Thomas, founder of Black Excellence Brunch is a seasoned media expert, dedicated activist, and mentor known for his contributions to the entertainment industry and philanthropic endeavors. Trell consistently champions social good causes and elevates stories of excellence within the Black community.
Founded by Thomas, this series reimagines the tradition of Sunday dinners, transforming them into a platform where Black culture, history, and excellence are celebrated in all forms. What started as a local gathering has grown into a global celebration, extending from Martha’s Vineyard’s iconic landscapes to Ghana’s vibrant streets. Each brunch serves as a powerful reminder of our community’s enduring legacy, honoring the past while inspiring the future.
