"The Unsung Heroes of WWII: The Story Behind The Six Triple Eight"

Prepare to be inspired this holiday season as Netflix brings an extraordinary story of courage and determination to screens worldwide. The Six Triple Eight, directed and written by Tyler Perry, premieres on December 20, with a limited theatrical release beginning December 6.

This powerful film highlights the unsung heroism of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas during World War II. Starring Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams, the commanding officer of this trailblazing battalion, the movie delves into a chapter of history that has remained largely untold—until now.

A Mission of Unmatched Determination
In early 1945, the 6888th was deployed to England with a daunting task: clearing a three-year backlog of 17 million undelivered letters and packages intended for U.S. soldiers on the front lines. Working in dilapidated buildings with little heat or light, the 855 women of the battalion faced racism, sexism, and the physical hardships of war. Despite being given six months to accomplish their mission, they completed it in just 90 days, proving their resilience and commitment to serving their country.

“The women of the 6888th Battalion represent strength, courage, and the energy in all of us that refuses to quit,” said producer Nicole Avant. Avant grew up hearing stories of Major Charity Adams and has been passionate about bringing this historical moment to life.

A Labor of Love
Avant’s dedication to telling this story led her to collaborate with Tyler Perry, who immediately saw the importance of shining a light on these remarkable women. The film is a deeply personal project for Avant, as it’s dedicated to her late parents, Clarence and Jacqueline Avant, who instilled in her a love of history and a deep respect for unsung heroes.

Through extensive research and personal interviews, Perry crafted a script that captures the heart and soul of the 6888th. He even met with Lena Derriecott King, one of the last surviving members of the battalion, who offered invaluable insights into the women’s experiences. King, who lived to see a rough film cut before her passing earlier this year, saluted the screen, saying, “Thank you for letting the world know we contributed.”

A Star-Studded Tribute
Kerry Washington brings grace and grit to the role of Major Adams, commanding the battalion with unwavering determination. “Kerry was always our first choice,” Avant shared. “She honors women of color in history and celebrates the underdog.”

The cast also includes Ebony Obsidian, who portrays Lena Derriecott King, and a talented ensemble that brings the battalion’s diverse stories to life.

Hope and Humanity on Display
More than just a war story, The Six Triple Eight is a testament to the power of unity and perseverance. It’s a reminder of the humanity behind every piece of mail delivered to soldiers longing for connection with loved ones back home. As Tyler Perry said, “These women didn’t do it for themselves; they did it for the greater good.”
