Grace Caroline Currey Stars as Iconic Comic Book Character in Shazam! Fury of The Gods

Actress Grace Caroline Currey stars as a key role in the recent film, Shazam! Fury of the Gods casted as iconic book character Mary Bromfield. Currey stars in the film alongside actors such as Zachary Levi, Rachel Zegler, and Lucy Liu.

 How did you get into acting? What prompted you to want to become an actress?

I always had a ready imagination and enjoyed playing pretend. Growing up my older brother would dress me up as Indiana Jones, Gilligan from Gilligan’s Island, or he’d draw lines on my face, making me look like the tiniest old lady. I can’t help but laugh when I see photos of little me in oversized clothes and theatrical makeup, with nothing but joy and confidence on my face. My brother definitely made me feel as though I had quite the range of characters I could play. He was a working actor before I was, and my mom says at a very young age I was asking, “When’s it my turn?” Around five years old, I entered the industry and little did I know twenty or so years later, I’m still just as smitten with storytelling.

Tell us about your new role in Shazam: Fury of The Gods?

I play Mary Bromfield, the eldest of the Shazam foster family and the brains of the group. She’s incredibly hard working and in the midst of figuring out how to juggle the responsibilities of adulthood and being a superhero. I got the honor of playing her Superhero form as well this time around, so it was very special to be responsible for the entirety of her character.

What was your favorite part about playing the role of Superhero Mary/Mary Bromfield and what was your inspiration for this role?

I really enjoyed getting to work with the different stunt rigs that we used for Mary’s flying sequences or her superhero landing. I made a Pinterest board of Mary comic book art, some recent appearances, some from the golden age of comics, I studied her flying poses and her overall posture when standing. It’s funny, but there’s a whole side of playing a superhero, where you’re having to think about how you pose your body when flying through the air, or what your hands are doing when your character’s about to fight. I found those details really fascinating and loved trying to weave what I saw in the comics into my portrayal of Mary.

How have your previous roles in previous films helped you with your role as Superhero Mary?

Playing Becking in Fall, really set me up to have confidence stepping into the superhero suit. That movie was so incredibly stunt heavy and challenging… emotionally and physically. I learned so much about what I’m capable of, it truly grew me in a way no project ever has. When I was faced with some of the falling, dropping stunts Mary has in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, I was so excited to do them, having had so much experience with wire work on Fall.

What do you hope viewers could learn from Superhero Mary’s character?

I love Mary’s perceptiveness… she’s got this quiet, watchful eye, and this ability to deliver startling honesty with care. She’s the one to sit with Billy and help him confront his emotions. I think we all have had moments of needing someone to slow down and see us. I hope to be that person for someone else, and to be able to sit with them and bring clarity.

Who are your inspirations in life/ the film industry?

I really admire Keira Knightley’s journey from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise into period films and historic dramas. She’s also had a long career and is still working which I find very inspiring. Christian Bale as well… I love his ability to portray characters with a whole inner world. And he started so young! I remember watching him in Empire of the Sun, when I was around the same age he was in that movie, and I remember wanting so badly to make art like he was.

Could you tell us anything about your upcoming projects?

I have a project in development that I’m really looking forward to. It requires me to use my ballet background and train in the studio again. Ballet was one of my first loves; to tell a story taking place in that world is very meaningful to me. I also have a couple of other projects in development that would involve me directing. Lots in the works, grateful to be surrounded by thoughtful creatives and work alongside them.
