Legendary Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards was presented with the inaugural Connecticut Governor’s Award for Excellence by Governor Ned Lamont at the Westport Library in Westport, Connecticut. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the cultural and civic life of the state. Richards, a longtime Connecticut resident, was also honored with the “Key to the State” for his influence on both the local community and the world.

The ceremony, held in the Westport Library’s Trefz Forum, was attended by approximately 200 guests, including media and music luminaries like TODAY Show anchor Craig Melvin, sportscaster Lindsay Czarniak, CNN anchor Alisyn Camerota, and Richard Butler, frontman of the Psychedelic Furs. The event was a fitting tribute to a man whose musical legacy continues to shape the world.

During his acceptance speech, Richards expressed gratitude for his 40 years in Connecticut: "I’d like to say thank you to you all, and thank you to the state of Connecticut. You kind of get lost for words with something like this around your neck." He spoke about raising his children in the state, saying, "I have to get the kids out of New York City so they could get some fresh air to breathe. And ever since, we’ve had a great life."

Richards, who has authored two books — his memoir Life (2010) and Gus & Me: The Story of My Granddad and My First Guitar (2014) — closed his speech with a thank-you to the Westport Library and a tribute to libraries: "This is a great building, a wonderful library, which even I didn’t know the full extent of," said Richards. “It’s very important that we keep our books unburnt. Without books, without knowing their special meaning, you don't have the movie in your head.”

The Rolling Stones, formed in 1962, are one of the most influential and successful rock bands in history. With members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, and Ronnie Wood, the band became pioneers of the British Invasion, blending R&B, blues, and rock and roll with other genres. Known for their electrifying live performances, iconic hits like Gimmie ShelterTry A Little Tenderness, Little Red Rooster, and Start Me Up, their enduring impact on popular culture, the Rolling Stones remain a symbol of rock music’s raw energy.

Richards has often credited blues and R&B, especially from Black artists, as the foundation of his music. He has praised artists like Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters, saying, "Black music is the reason I’m here." Richards also recalled a moment with blues legend Buddy Guy, who thanked the Rolling Stones for revitalizing the blues in America. This ongoing connection to blues continues to resonate in the Stones' music.

Governor Lamont also expressed admiration for Richards, stating, "I’ve been inspired by the Rolling Stones for more than 50 years, I hope you have as well. Keith Richards is an amazing member of our community. We’re so proud that he’s here, and I’m so proud of the opportunity to give him this award of excellence."

Bill Harmer, Executive Director of the Westport Library, spoke about the role libraries play in fostering creativity and opportunity: "As we celebrate Keith today, we are reminded that libraries are not just places to borrow books; they are agencies for equality, opportunity, creativity, and empowerment. His recognition today is a celebration of the values we hold dear: creativity, authenticity, and the belief that art and culture have the power to change lives."
