Tribeca 2023 Spotlight: “OnBoard” Celebrates the Rise of Black Women in Corporate America

The 2023 Tribeca Film Festival continued its legacy of spotlighting stories that challenge norms and elevate underrepresented voices. Among this year’s standout selections was OnBoard, a powerful documentary that chronicles the ascent of Black women into some of the most exclusive spaces in corporate America: the boardroom.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Deborah Riley Draper, OnBoard takes viewers on an inspiring journey through decades of progress, beginning with the appointment of the first Black woman to a corporate board in the early 1970s. That historic moment paved the way for generations of Black women leaders who would go on to shape corporate culture from the inside out.

But the film doesn’t rest on the past—it roots itself firmly in the present. Against the backdrop of the social justice movement of 2020, two visionary executives recognized an opportunity to accelerate progress. Their efforts led to the creation of a global network dedicated to supporting Black women seeking—and securing—positions on boards of directors. Through this initiative, the documentary reveals how a new generation of women is leveraging its collective strength to drive meaningful change in the highest levels of business.

OnBoard is more than a story of firsts—it’s a portrait of resilience, sisterhood, and strategy. Through interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, the film gives a glimpse into the real challenges Black women face while navigating boardrooms traditionally dominated by white men. From microaggressions to systemic barriers, the obstacles are clear. But so is the determination.

The women featured in the documentary are executives, trailblazers, and mentors. They speak openly about their personal journeys, the significance of mentorship, and the critical importance of representation. One key message rings loud and clear: when Black women lead, the entire organization benefits. Their presence on boards brings not only new perspectives but also accountability, innovation, and a richer understanding of the communities businesses aim to serve.

Following the premiere of OnBoard at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, a dynamic Q&A session was held, featuring director Deborah Riley Draper, producer Merline Saintil, and executive producer Shannon Nash. The panel delved into the documentary's exploration of Black women's ascent in corporate America, discussing the challenges and triumphs depicted in the film. The conversation highlighted the importance of representation and the ongoing efforts to diversify corporate leadership. The engaging dialogue underscored the documentary's impact and the significance of its message in today's corporate landscape.

What makes OnBoard particularly timely is its focus on action and advocacy. Rather than simply presenting problems, the documentary showcases the solutions these women are building in real time. Viewers walk away not just inspired—but informed and empowered.

The film was a standout at Tribeca, not only for its cinematic quality but for the important conversation it sparked. It serves as a reminder that corporate leadership must evolve, and that evolution must include the voices and visions of Black women.

In a time where equity and inclusion remain more buzzword than reality in many corners of the business world, OnBoardoffers a hopeful and urgent reminder: real change happens when we build the table—and invite everyone to sit at it.

As OnBoard continues its journey through festivals and screenings, its message remains bold, necessary, and unforgettable.
