When did your love for makeup artistry begin?

I had early inspiration; my mom and all my aunts wore lots of makeup. I was surrounded my strong Latin women so the spark for beauty was ignited at a young age. While in high school I started playing around with makeup and wearing eyeliner. I was influenced by 90’s goth and grunge so I quickly developed an aesthetic and a passion for makeup that allowed me to express my individuality in my early teens.

What makeup look or trend do you think is timeless?

The Cat Eye makeup trend is timeless because it embodies a perfect blend of classic elegance and bold sophistication. Originating from ancient Egyptian beauty practices and popularized in the 1950’s by icons like Audrey Hepburn, the cat eye remains a staple.

You’ve worked with Kim Petras & Tate McRae, just to name a few, when working with an artist is it more of a collaboration or dealers’ choice?

It just depends on the project. Often the artist will come in with a full concept and I help bring that to life but the two artist you mention above are very adventurous when it comes to their looks and give me wiggle room to play. I personally like to collaborate because at the end of the day I want the artist to feel good with what they have on.

What is your favorite cover look you’ve done and why?

My recent cover for Cosmopolitan featuring Kim Petras. It was the first time we played around with short hair and dialed back the makeup. It’s often those projects that reveal a lot of true beauty. It was about using the art of restraint and emphasizing her features without making it feel made up. I just love the way it turned out all the images were so sick.

Let’s be basic for a moment… what defines a Pride-themed look for you?

Pride represents more than just a celebration; it embodies a powerful message of identify so that’s hard to define since I truly feel it’s all about self-expression and authenticity. It’s not about being literal and using all the colors of the rainbow although there is a fun space for that but rather wearing something that you feel good in.

Does your identity play into your craft as a makeup artist?

I feel like it influences my choices for sure, my life experiences, the music I listen too, the books I’ve read, the places I visit all make up who I am, and I pour that into my art. Makeup is not just about aesthetics for me; it’s a powerful medium of self-expression and a reflection of who I am. My identity influences the styles I gravitate towards, the colors I choose, and the techniques I use. It allows me to tell my story, embrace my individuality and celebrate the facets of my personality.

If you could give advice to a queer person struggling to experiment with makeup or their look, what would you say?

I would say start by embracing the journey of self-expression and discovery. Remember, makeup is an art form with no right or wrong way to create. Begin with small, simple steps, experimenting with different colors, techniques, and styles to find what makes you feel confident and authentic. Seek inspiration from diverse sources, including online tutorials and the vibrant LGBTQ+ community, which often provides supportive spaces for experimentation and creativity.
