Talkin’ Denim With Rastah
From festivals like Coachella to trendy socialites captured in streetstyle, denim has made its way back into our fashion radar. But did it ever really leave? The answer is no, but a brand that is no stranger to putting their own twist on the popular textile is, Rastah. Founded in 2018 by cousins Zain, Ismail, and Adnan Ahmad, the brand is a premier South Asian contemporary label that aims at reinterpreting South Asian heritage and artisanship. While the origin of the brand is rooted in Lahore, Pakistan it has now reached customers and fashionistas worldwide.
What makes the brand standout is their unique printing technique done by hand-carved wooden blocks. This method of artisanship has been modernized by the family into something one of a kind. As the brand page mentions, “we may flirt with tradition but reject nostalgia.”
With a creative eye and skill, Rastah has also evolved how denim can look and feel. A brand rep shares, “all of rastah's denim is made by hand using traditional handlooms. The practice dates back centuries and is one of the most sustainable ways of converting yarn into fabric. We use a blend of cotton yarn and weave density that creates a very textures, heavy and robust denim which is incredibly unique.”
